Traps and Puzzles

Traps & Puzzles for Dungeons and Dragons

This section will contain the articles that have a significant amount of traps and/or puzzles in them (sorted for you convenience). Unlike with the tags, which flag every monster with a trap or puzzle in it, this section will only have the articles with a significant amount of traps,  or at least one puzzle.

Some of my traps, although by no means all, are meant to be run in combination with the monster of the article. Even these ones can be run by themselves, or you can look for a monster that shares the same characteristics and use that one. In general, the main monster characteristics as far as traps are concerned are flying, ranged attacks, incorporeal, and control effects. (See the beginning of Traps for more detail.)

Terrain Challenges

D&D Terrains, and How They Challenge Players

This section contains the various articles that explore how to use terrain, generally as a means of enhancing the monster. (With that said, the terrain effects are ones that can be used easily without the monster, or with a different, similar monster.)

Simply that fact that a certain monster is generally found inside a specific terrain will not cause it to appear here.

Combat Tactics

Monster Combat Tactics, from Spellcaster to Skirmisher

This section is for the monsters that have specific fighting styles, such as skirmisher, tank, spellcaster, ambusher, or ranged. Most of the monsters here have their optimal fighting style explained in the article, and are fairly easy to use in combination with other monsters.

I also have a section called Horde, for articles where the players have to deal with too large an amount of monsters to be defeated outright (generally, the goal is to either hold an area for an amount of time or to outrun/escape) Pack, for articles where players can’t eliminate the monsters due to numbers and must navigate around them, and Counter-Heist, for monsters to interfere in a heist scenario without ruining it.

For a list of specific monsters to fight alongside any specific monster, see the minion/allies tab at the beginning of any monster article.

Allies and Dialogue

Friends, Neutral Parties, and Negotiations

This section contains a list of all the articles that have advice on running the monster as an ally of the players, whether in combat or otherwise, and how to run dialogue with various monsters.

Dialogue or negotiations are further divided into seperate sections for ones where the players must persuade the monster, and ones where the monster “persuades” the players through lies, hidden identities, or similar tactics.

Hazards

Hazards, Obstacles, and Other Terrain Changing Features

This section contains a list of all the articles that make use of items like fire, a quick spreading hazard that destroys the area around it, and the ground under PCs feet, boats, a moving “terrain” that can be destroyed, with devastating consequences, bridges, a easily defended chokepoint that the players have to get past, and similar features.

DM Advice

Roleplaying and General DM Advice

All the DM advice that doesn’t fit into a different category. For example, running horror, large scale conflicts, roleplaying advice for certain monsters, and more.

About Me

I’ve been a DM since I was about 10 years old. (Not of D&D, admittedly, but still.) After growing bored of fights that were all the same, dungeons heavily populated by one monster type, and a general shortage of ideas, I figured I’d embark on my own trip through the Monster Manual, one monster at a time. Feel free to join the quest.
