2024/2014 Monster Manuals, and What Now?

This is just a brief update to address the issue of the new Monster Manual(2024), and to set blog policy for the way forward.

For at least the next year (dating from the release of the Monster Manual 2024), I plan to treat both Monster Manuals as authentic. What will that mean?

Changes to Monsters: All monsters that appear in both Monster Manuals will be covered according to both sets of rules. I’m hopeful that most of the time that can be done with a short note or two in the text (sometimes even that might be unnecessary). Where necessary, I intend to give at least one encounter for each edition. (My original goal was one encounter per monster. I’m happy that I managed to exceed that so well, but it also means that I might post multiple encounters for one edition and one for the other, or one of which will work for the other.)

New Monsters: For the duration, all monsters will be considered valid, even if they only exist in one version, and I will cover them.

Monster Order: The 2024 Monster Manual made the decision to split up a lot of monsters that were previously grouped together. I will be continuing with the order of the 2014 Monster Manual, as changing at this stage is too big a pain. This is the one thing I am quite confident I will continue past the end of the year, regardless. The exception will be human/NPC statblocks, which were originally in an appendix but no longer are. Those will be posted in their current places, according to the 2024 MM.

I will not be going back and fixing or adding to any monsters that have been changed. I want to concentrate on new content, and I’m hopeful that most of it is still mostly usable. I will also not return to cover new monsters that are earlier in the MM than where I’m holding. Maybe after I finish to the end, I’ll loop again from the beginning to catch them. For now, Forward.

I will be using 2014 until I finish Dragons. I’ve already published 95% of dragons under 2014 rules, and I don’t want to change now. I apologize for not posting for such a long time, but I was having problems with WordPress. Hopefully, that’s over, and I can go back to regular updates.

About Me

I’ve been a DM since I was about 10 years old. (Not of D&D, admittedly, but still.) After growing bored of fights that were all the same, dungeons heavily populated by one monster type, and a general shortage of ideas, I figured I’d embark on my own trip through the Monster Manual, one monster at a time. Feel free to join the quest.
